Tor Cotton was turning 50, and wanted a book of portraits of all her friends and family. The photographer ended up interviewing them as well, so under each portrait were kind, or funny or insightful words about what she meant to the person in the picture. After she got her “so far…” book, Tor said “All my life I have known and been told all that is wrong with me (well, especially growing up). The book is the absolute antithesis of that.”
“Originally I thought of my book being photos of 50 people who were important to me, one for each year of my life. I made an ‘invitation list’ – a party in a book. Making the book was like having everyone together in the same room, on an equal and very inclusive footing, without any of the potential for awkwardness. Without exception the reaction is “Oh my god, what a beautiful idea, what an amazing book, I wish I had one.”
